[Process Post 13] Last Process Post

As I write this last process post, I will briefly wrap up some site-based details. I won’t use too much sappy words 😂

Links: I have checked every link in my posts and enabled new tab when clicked. Most of my links were, but I double checked anyway. Most exceptions were in the reference list at the end where applicable that had to change.

Consistency and Style: As my site has grown and my stylistic choices had changed, I definitely had some things that I liked to do as the weeks went by. Some of these include these coloured headings where I split up my segments of information or topics. This was something I did have, but it had a gradual change. First was bolding, position, colour and then font size. After Week 4, I had found the ideal style for my posts. However, my early posts did not follow this style. So, I went back and changed them all to match up.

PUB101 Tag and Posiel: My TA’s feedback had mentioned the need for “PUB101” tag in my posts and whether if Posiel would have sufficed. Personally, I think this had to do with the instructions in the beginning of the term and it became a remnant detail from there. Mainly to the question “Where would the PUB 101 content live?” I agree with the feedback and the redundancy of PUB 101 tag is not as relevant unless it is related to PUB 101 itself. Given that I have a menu with the PUB 101 title, it would be clear enough.

In terms of Menus, I will keep OneSlice category where in the ‘perfect’ world, there would be OneSlice, TwoSlice, ThreeSlice and so on. It would be a logistical hassle at the moment to change, but it is something to worth update in the future though!

Process Post 13 Prompt

Now let us discuss our final prompt topic, community guidelines. In this segment, I will also discuss some inspirations, twists and additions I made that branched off from this prompt a week ago. That is the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and Community Guidelines which I noticed most sites have, but we didn’t exactly talk about.

Community guidelines I have set is straightforward for the most part. They are centered around the functions that help maintain general wellbeing of others and contribution to the community health as well. They are implemented in my menus of the site for now.

What this means is the “common” expectations like respect, kindness, etc. that can achieve these end goals is what the guidelines are intended. While my guidelines are short, it is difficult to account for all situations. However, it is something to start with for now.

After all, what we learned early on in PUB 101 from John Suler about online disinhibition. Perhaps someone online may have what Suler calls the You Don’t Know Me (dissociative anonymity) where they act on the internet without care or responsibility as they think what they say or do online cannot be traced or connected to their real lives.

I think Maria Konnikova talks about something in her article that is important about the online culture and how I have an example to relate to quite often.

“…our experience of something is affected by whether or not we will share it socially. Take away comments entirely, and you take away some of that shared reality, which is why we often want to share or comment in the first place. We want to believe that others will read and react to our ideas.”

Maria Konnikova, 2013

I immediately think to the YouTube videos with comment sections being turned off, mostly I find they are videos that are deemed “for children.” Even though the Act and YouTube’s recent policies resulted by lobbyists is something worth looking at, strictly focusing on the online interactions, I find the comment section often very disappointing if it is closed.

A space that has interesting points, timestamps of people’s favourite moments, quotes, memes, etc. are all part of the watching experience. I find laughter and thoughts from that comment area. Without it, it feels weird, and I find a new video fairly quickly.

A space that can offer a second thought or an extra ponder has now been silenced.

The Guardian states how they want to “do more research to dig deeper into the problem, and to discover not only what can cause online conversations to go awry, but also what media organisations can do to help make those conversations better, and more inclusive.”

I think this is one of the approaches to take when we are discussing the online digital platforms and what can happen in these spaces.

Part of the implementation process? From the very start, my posts have a comment section where readers can submit comments. They are filtered and by approval basis. Since the scale of my site is not large, it is still feasible to keep this system as I do not receive that many comments.

Wrapping Up on Week 13

Although this week is talking about comments and guidelines, I will change gears to a more broader perspective now.

This site is a project for over 13 weeks now. Considering how the domain subscription is for 1 year (or more if renewed), I plan to continue using this space to learn more about websites, web design and other projects. WordPress is powerful based on my understanding, so I will consider how to progress in the future. In this course, we briefly mentioned both site creation to content concerns to be aware of.

I know one topic is domains and how we ‘process’ our content to publish. For example, those who use Ghost, Weebly and Wix will have a considerable amount of content transferring issues. While we may own our own domain, the services are hosted on ReclaimHosting which I did not research further into.

Lastly, the need for the site may continue as I may consider having a minor in Publishing. I was almost designated a Publishing minor, but I wanted more time to think about it.

These are all areas that I would consider more in the future.

For now, that is all.

Thank you for reading.
